The story begins with the arrival of a father and son named Saotome at Tendo Dojo of the Anything Goes school of martial arts. One of the three Tendo daughters is to become Ranma's fiancée...but no matter how you look at it, the new arrivals aren't a father and son, but a panda and a little girl!

It turns out that the father and son went into a little-traveled area of China for martial arts training, and there an unlucky occurrence changed them. Now, when doused in cold water, the father, Genma, becomes a panda and his son, Ranma, becomes a girl!

The older sisters somehow manage to stick their little sister Akane with the betrothal, but she doesn't take much of a liking to Ranma, and what's more, she has a secret crush on someone else...
